Photo Noir by Perthshire Photographer Martin Ward Photography

Photo Noir is one of my favourite styles of portraiture. The images are simply classic and timeless and everyone falls in love with them.

Make no mistake, this is NOT run-of-the-mill photography, this is the creation of art to be shown, admired, coveted and desired.

Here are a few shots from our recent session with the Hughes Family.

If you would like more information on "Photo Noir" or to book a session please visit our website - Martin Ward Photography

Win Your Wedding Photography Finalists | Perthshire Wedding Photographer | Martin Ward Photography

VOTING CLOSED

Here are our finalists in the Win Your Wedding Photography competition. Our judges had such a hard time whittling it down to just 3 so we have 5 finalists all competing for your votes.

Votes should be cast using the buttons at the top. The competition will end at 8pm on Wednesday, 24th August 2011. Please ignore the ticker, it's set to American West Coast time. We wish you all the best of luck.

Without further ado, here are the couples and their stories.

Amy Hutchison and Max Smith

Amy wrote "Whether or not this competition is for us, don't get me wrong it would be fantastic and certainly a weight off cost wise, but i cant give you no sad story or tale, but i certainly can tell u that we are soo much in love. I could write so much as to how we met and what was said, but no one will truly know how we feel deep down. And this is why on the 19th of May 2012 in the St Matthews church of Scotland, we will be getting married nothing fancy nothing over the top just something to show we are in this life  together for the rest of our life's. So i take this opportunity to tell everyone that i Amy Hutchison cannot wait for the day that me and my fiancĂ© Max Smith become MAN & WIFE!!!!!!xxx"

James Stewart and Kassandra Hart

Kassandra wrote "I think that my fiance and I should be considered for the photography as we have been together since the age of 14 and have proved many people wrong about young love. We are getting married on our 8th anniversary and it will be such a special day. Most of our family have not met before and it will be a chance for our families to come together for the first time. It will also be a sad day for me as my mum passed away when I was 15, and with all of the emphasis on weddings being about the bride and her mother, I have already been through so much in planning my wedding without her. Photography is not something that we have much to spend on, but having photographs of our special day will give us something to look back on and remember, years down the line."

Garry Cooper and Stephanie Riley

Stephanie's sister Debbie entered them to our competition.

Debbie wrote "i hope my story is different from the rest you received as i am not the bride or groom but we the brides older sisters always a bridesmaids never a bride lol. Our younger sister is 24 and her fiancĂ©e 25 and Garry proposed on a beach in mexico inside the love heart shape on the sand was a table and a romantic meal for two with candles the works ........down on one knee with a ring he had hidden in his suitcase lucky she never found it .....so romantic ..... x they have been putting everything into their wedding any extra cash goes towards their day but winning this prize would make her year and winning a photography package like you are offering is a dream come true. Garry is so romantic and they are loves young dream and seeing their faces if they were to win would be amazing. They both work so hard Stephanie is a dispensary and her evening job being a carer gives her little time but we all have a weekly meeting usually dinner with a few wee cheeky cocktails to chat about the wedding and Garry and ourselves have been trying to arrange special treats for her on her big day. Everyone will say the same thing about this prize changing their day but it really would be the best start for these loved up young couple it would save them a fortune and from your website your pictures are fantastic and would make anyone day to have you as a photographer and a great memory and fantastic photos to display and look back on."

Helen Brough and Damon Charlie Howard

Helen wrote "I am writing to you are story of why we should win your amazing competition. Myself and Damon met in 2008 in a work environment of which I should never have been there as i was currently waiting for my visa to Dubai. However this was running late and my sister mentioned to come work with her    To earn some extra cash. I had always heard of this lad called  " damo" funny caring guy but never thought anything of it ( I didn't want to fall in love nor meet any one) however time went on and within a few weeks of sitting next to Damon I fell madly in love with him. We both knew I could be leaving any minute so we made every minute count. No one seen us for days on end and we would enjoy each others company. We planned our first date for 31 st October and was so excited however I received a phone call the 30th to say I was booked on the plane for the next day. We shed some tears we hugged for hours. Never once was Damon ever selfish he never made me feel guilty he never asked me to stay he was so encouraging and became my rock whilst I lived my life in Dubai. Damon made the experience so easy we spoke everyday on the phone and sent letters all the time. In February 2009 Damon flew to Dubai an proposed to me on the 14th February. Of course I said yes this was our commitment to one another that we would last. At first some of the family were not supportive and we got the talking of how it wouldn't last but we knew different. I spent a year in Dubai finished my contract and came home to spend the rest of my life with Damon.
Since coming back from Dubai in 2009 we have been through so much meaning every time we saved for the wedding something would go wrong. Damon lost a very good job and was in and out of jobs for nearly a year we lost a lot of deposits that were on venues and churches and got ourselves into a lot of debt nearly having the mortgage reposed.  I then went on to become clinically depressed and seeing a counsellor after losing a best friend of mine ( my chief bridesmaids) again putting the wedding on hold. My parents went through a nasty divorce after 35 years together, again which made the wedding difficult to cope with along with my depression. In the end myself and Damon are living separate now due to money issues which is agony for us both. However we love each other so much and we know we are strong enough to do so. I have had my wedding dress for 2 years now and so living apart is allowing us to save for our wedding in 2012 ( small budget) Which is all we want to be husband and wife.
We are on a really tight budget and one of the things we are having to cut back on is the photographer yet this is what we want the most, pictures to capture of our special day and how in love we are. This would mean the world to us we have never won anything and had such bad luck in what's meant to be the best years of our lives. I hope you read our story and see why we deserve to win this. Thank you for taking your time to read our story."

John McQueen and Margaret Keany

Margaret wrote "Since meeting John over 5 years ago, I am now a firm believer in destiny. The night we met was my first work night out and I just managed to catch the last bus home. At the next stop more people got on and being a naturally nosy person I looked up, straight into the most gorgeous brown eyes I have ever seen, and the rest of his face was lovely too - I really couldn't have stopped the smile that jumped to my lips even if I had wanted to, and I was rewarded with a smile in return. He sat next to me and we started chatting about our nights - mine with work friends, his watching his football team win on TV in a bar.. Eventually he plucked up the courage to ask for my number - after we passed his stop and the bus emptied a little more. I gave it to him and a week or so later we had our first date and first kiss and the rest they say is history. I think that if we hadn't met that night then destiny would have still brought us together because there are so many things we like and have in common. John proposed to me on one knee at the Magic Fountains in Barcelona - it was beautiful.

I really will be marrying my best friend on our wedding day.

I know that our wedding day will be very emotional, I lost my mum and grandad when I was 15 and the closer the wedding gets, the more I miss their presence in all the planning and organisation that a wedding takes, my mum was of course my mum and the mother of the bride tends to be very involved in wedding preparations. I was very close to my grandad as he and my gran raised me and I would have loved for him to give me away. Im sure my uncle (my Grandads son) will be just as wonderful. We lost my aunt just over a year ago and my uncle who was also my grandads brother and really made a party a good one with his presence and humour and kindness - they will all be sorely missed on the day. There are some ill members of family on both my and Johns sides and we hope that they will be able to join us on our special day. We are also on a very small budget and since buying our first home together in October, are reluctant to take on more debt, and so the more we can make or do or selves or friends and family can help with the better. I know that we will have a fantastic day anyway but it would be so special to have a professional photographer to capture all the happy and sad moments on our big day for us to look back on in years to come with our own children and grandchildren."

Perthshire Wedding Photographer | Martin Ward Photography Offers Free Pre-Wedding Shoots

Choosing a wedding photographer requires a huge leap of faith particularly if you have not been recommended one. Every website seems to be roughly the same and every photographer is offering roughly the same in terms of packages and options. It’s a daunting task.

Where I like to try and be different to stand out from the crowd of other Perthshire Wedding Photographers I am offering a free pre wedding photo shoot to anyone who may be interested in booking a photographer for their wedding. There is absolutely no obligation to book me for your wedding after the shoot but it gives you a chance to see whether I'm the photographer for you, and of course it gives me a chance to show you how great I can make you look.

A ‘pre wedding shoot’ is photographers speak for ‘a photography session before the wedding itself’. Its a great opportunity to not only get some great relaxed photographs of you as a couple but also to get used to being photographed. You get to know your photographer and understand what is possible and your photographer gets to know you a little and understand what you’re looking for when the big day arrives.

Once you have the photographs from the shoot you decide whether to book me or not, no hassle, no strings, it really is that simple.

Nicola and Chris' Balbirne House Hotel Wedding Photography

As a wedding photographer I love summer weddings – gorgeous hats, kids playing outside and a glass of bucks fizz on the lawn. Nicola and Chris' wedding at Balbirnie House Hotel was as lovely and relaxed as it sounds.

These two are so chilled, relaxed and great fun. It was a pleasure to meet all their family and frinds – especially those that had travelled all the way from Canada.

Nicola and Chris – thank you for choosing Martin Ward Photography to carry out your wedding photography and thank you for letting us be part of your big day.

Here are a few highlights, look forward to catching up and sharing the whole story with you. Can't wait to hear how exciting your honeymoon was, got a feeling that we will be a tad jealous!!

Wedding Tips From Perthshire Wedding Photographer - Helping couples who are camera shy

I often meet clients that are a little camera shy, this ordinarily would be a bit of a problem especially as its their big day and they will be spending some time in front of the camera. Over the years I have learnt some tips and tricks to help overcome this problem with very natural results.

1) The first thing I arrange is a pre wedding photo shoot, this really does help with getting the bride and groom to be relaxed in front of the camera. This will make it a little easier come the wedding having worked together and broken the ice prior to the special day.

2) I discuss and show examples of the poses before the big day so the bride and groom can practice them before its a 'real' scenario. This will help to put them at ease and also enable them to think about other poses they may want to try.

3) On the wedding day I like adopt a reportage style of photography and dont get in the faces of guests or the happy couple. Keeping our distance more often than not get candid natural photos.

4) What group photos are required should be written down before the big day to make sure you don't miss any and it also makes the process allot faster and less stressful for everyone attending the day.

Wedding Tips From A Wedding Photographer - Easy Way To Write Your Vows

For all the brides and grooms struggling to write your vows. Lee-Anne and my difficulty with this was almost comical. Hate may be slightly too strong a word, but suffice to say we were not too fond of each other’s opinions regarding the vows.  We struggled for a while for weeks and weeks and weeks.
But somewhere between the thoughts of “I can’t believe he/she wants me to say that” and “could I be any cheesier?”, we came up with the following approach. I share this because our vows ended up so special, that they are still a topic of conversation to this day.
What was our secret, while it was simple, so simple we couldn't believe we hadn't thought of it earlier. We simply turned the process around. Rather than writing what we wanted to say, we wrote what we wanted to hear each other say. A huge weight came off our shoulders, and we were free to write what we wanted to hear rather than what we thought the other person would like to hear.
Then we combined the two versions and pulled out the very best of both. I think the whole process took us less than an hour and had us both feeling excited about the wedding and each other.
Hope this helps.

How Important Is Photography

I am frequently asked why I chose portrait and wedding photography as a profession, I always answer the same way; “Because I want to do something that matters.”
For an amateur or hobbyist, photography is a fun pass-time. But for serious shutterbugs and professionals, photography is much more.
Photography is about telling stories and more importantly protecting memories. With a camera you can protect YOUR memory of a scene, in essence capture the moment. You can also preserve that moment for generations to come.
That’s pretty important.
Photography has many uses. It can be used to document history, create art, preserve memories, etc.
Ask someone who’s running out of a burning home what they’ll grab. Nine times out of ten, it’s the photo album or photos of loved one's.
The bottom line is, photography is VERY important

What To Wear For Your Photoshoot

This question is the most asked question every photographer has when they book portrait sittings. Therefore we feel it makes sense to give some general guidelines.

General Clothing Tips

Simple, simple, simple, that is definately the way to go. To make sure your portraits are timeless, it important to keep clothing choices clean looking and simple. Logos and characters can date your photos.

For a classic look, simple, timeless clothing in solid, neutral colours photograph best. Denim or khakis with solid shirts work well for a casual look. Clothing with too busy of a pattern or logo is distracting and detracts from essence of the portraits, you and your family. On the other hand, for a modern more "fashion" look, feel free to bring along some trendier outfits with fun and fashionable colors. When in doubt, feel free to have on hand several outfits, and we will help you chose which will photograph the best.

Jewelry and accessories should be minimal, avoid wearing watches. When photogrpahing more than one person please consider their outfits as a whole, and keep colours uniform. Please ensure that everyone dresses in a similar manner (i.e casual or dressy)

Family Portraits

Choose colours in the same tonal range so that no single individual stands out. Jeans- dark colors if you prefer a more traditional look, Khakis - all solid lighter, neutral tones for a more casual look.

Baby Portraits

If you wish to have your baby's portrait created without his/her clothing or nappy; please keep him/her in loose garments prior to our session so he/she won't have any indentations on their skin from her clothing.

If you have a baby or toddler, bring along whatever you need to keep your child clean and happy: nappies, wipes, snacks, etc. Please also bring a favorite toy that makes noise, as we may need to use it as an attention-getting tool.

Maternity Portraits

Wear loose clothing! As you know, restrictive clothing (bras, socks, etc.) leaves marks on your body that take time to go away. Try to avoid wearing anything restrictive before (and to) the shoot if at all possible.

Portrait Photography Tip #3: On Location

Photographing on location is a completely different ball game to the studio, as we have to work within the confines of the environment and elements.
Going on location gives you total freedom of expression in your portrait photography.  You may wish to be photographed participating in a hobby, sport or activity.  Lifestyle photography, could simply be meeting up somewhere you like to walk or in the local park.  Kids playing in the park make great photographs for you to remember that time in their childhood.

How to look fabulous

The key to looking fabulous on location is to work with your environment and not against it.  It’s best to dress appropriate for your location.  If you’re out for a country walk, wear jeans and walking boots etc.  Kids playing in the park should wear their play clothes.
Your portraits can be casual and relaxed giving off a sense of calm.  Alternatively, you may want your portraits packed with drama and high impact.  We can do that too.
Many factors will affect the portraits we create for you.  And depending on what you want, many factors will be contradictory so we will not attempt to explain them here.

Wednesday 16 March 2011

Portrait Photography Tip #2: Studio Black Background

A black or dark background is great for creating pictures that are more classical in style or with portray deeper feelings.  It’s not as well suited to fun family photographs partly as the lighting needs careful consideration.  However, dark backgrounds are ideal for formal family portraits.
The black background is well suited to photography that is more artistic especially where a human body is more exposed.  This could be pregnancy, newborn babies or of course nudes photography.  These are all ideal subjects for displaying as monochrome photographs.
I find black backgrounds are perfect for newborn babies photographed for black and white.  Monochrome removes almost any trace of deep red birthmarks that simply melt into the baby’s natural skin tones.

How to look fabulous

Assuming you’ve read portrait photography tip #1, you’ve already guessed that dark clothes are better suited to a black or dark background.  Limiting the contrast between your clothing and the background draws the viewer’s attention to you.
For example, if you wore a brilliant white shirt (or blouse) against a dark background the shirt would dominate the picture – almost certainly overwhelming you.
However, if your clothes or hair is virtually black they could blend into the background.  Sometimes this is desirable. But when it isn’t it must be fixed with additional lighting.

Tuesday 15 March 2011

Portrait Photography Tip #1: Studio white background

The white floor and background is probably the most popular studio set up today.  This is often referred to as the white infinity background.
It’s light and airy, and without distracting patterns in the background.  This is perfect for both contemporary family portraits and a glamorous makeover that looks like it’s fresh out of any popular magazine.

How to look fabulous

It may surprise you but you should wear light colour clothing.  Light colours will compliment the light background creating a bright photograph with high impact.
Don’t wear very dark clothing.  Dark clothing creates too much contrast with the bright background.  The viewers’ eyes will follow lines created by areas of bright and dark meeting instead of being drawn to you, which is where we really want their attention.

Why Are Professional Photographers So Expensive?

This article has been extremely well received by the photography community and is now referred to by countless photography websites, forums and blogs around the world.

In this digital age where everyone has digital cameras, scanners and home "photo printers", when people upload their photos to local supermarket website and pick them up a few hours later, we hear this all the time - How in the world do Professional Photographers charge £x for a 8x10 when they cost just £4 from the supermarkets?

Here's why

Simply put, you are not just paying for the actual photograph, you are paying for time and expertise. Firstly, lets look at the time involved. (If you don't read this entire article please at least read this first part)

The Average One Hour Portrait Session

  • Travel to the session
  • Set up, preparation, talking to the Client etc
  • Shoot the photos
  • Travel from the session
  • Load images into computer
  • Back up files onto an external hard drive
  • 4-8 hours of Adobe®Photoshop® time, including cropping, contrast, colour, sharpening and backing up edited photos. In some cases, proof photos are also ordered
  • 2-3 hours to talk to the Client, answer questions, receive order and payment, order their prints, receive and verify the prints, ship the prints to the Client
  • In some cases, meet the Client to review photos and place orders.

You can see how a one-hour session can easily turn into a eight-hour working day or more from start to finish. So when you see a professional photographer charging a session fee of £125 (which I don't lol) the Client is not paying them £125 per hour.

The Eight-Hour Wedding

A wedding photographer typically meets with the Bride and Groom several times before and after the Wedding. It's not uncommon to end up with 1500-2000 images, much more than a portrait session. Many photographers end up spending 40-60 hours working on one eight-hour Wedding if you look at the time that is truly involved.

(Don't forget the Wedding photographer runs the day to a certain extent. A comfortable, confident Wedding photographer can make the day go more smoothly.)

The Expertise and Cost of Doing Business

Shooting professional photography is a skill acquired through years of experience. Taking professional portraits involves much more than having a nice camera. Most photographers take years from buying their first camera to making money through photography. In addition to learning how to use the camera, there is a mountain of other equipment and software programmes used to edit and print photos, manage websites etc. And don't forget backdrops, props, rent, utilities, insurance etc!!

In addition to the financial investment, photographers actually have to have people skills to make subjects comfortable in front of the camera. Posing people to look their best is a skill by itself. You could argue that it is more important than actually using the camera. A poorly exposed photo can be saved, however a poorly posed photo cannot.

The Chain Store

Chain stores do have their place. For a very cheap price you can run in, shoot some photos, and be done with it. But you get what you pay for.

Consider the time and effort that a professional photographer puts into photographs, compared to a chain store. Store sessions last a few minutes, while a professional photographer takes time to get to know people, makes the comfortable, makes them laugh. If a baby is crying at a chain store they often don't have the time (or the patience) to wait because everyone is in a hurry.

The truth is many chain stores lose money.

Consider this, in America, Wal-Mart closed 500 of their portrait studios in 2007 because of the financial drain.

The Real Deal

Professional photographers are just that - Professionals. No different from a mechanic, doctor, dentist or electrician. But a professional photographer often becomes a friend. Someone who documents a family for generations with professional, personal photographs of cherished memories. Maybe we need to help Clients look at it this way:  A pair of scissors cost £1 at the supermarket. Still, most people will gladly pay more to hire a professional hair dresser to cut their hair. The added attention and quality a professional photographer gives is worth every penny.

The staff and customers of the Derbyshire, Cheshire and Dunfermline Building Societies have generously agreed to give up their time and energy to raised funds to provide support for families in their local communities living with Motor Neurone Disease.

When asked if there was anything that we would like to donate to their fundraising raffle / prize draw we where only too happy to oblige and offer a free portrait photography session.

Little Faye - Our Competition Winner

On Saturday, 5th February we had the pleasure of taking more photos of little Faye, after she won our "Best of 2010" competition. Here is a small sample of some of the images captured on the day.

Congratulations once again to Faye and her mum Jenny and it was a pleasure to work with you again.
